I'm thinking I may get much of it done before Thanksgiving, but we'll see...

Ok...I have to admit. I've become addicted to Sex and the City! I'll post a photo soon. I found that I really liked the knit-picks merino. The only drawback is that's it's not machine washable, but the yarn was really quite nice to work with. Very soft! Now, I just need to convince Knit Picks to produce some machine washable yarn that would work for kids items.

Anyone have suggestions for a good natural fiber yarn that's machine washable and AFFORDABLE to use for kids clothing? Really, I can't justify using yarns like Debbie Bliss (even though I love knitting with it!) because kids grow out of everything so quickly.

I'm back to working on the top down sweater for my six-year old and it's going well. I cheated a bit and fixed the glitch by decreasing a few stitches in a row rather than frogging it and it seems none the worse for it. I'm past the sleeve openings and am knitting the body. Should go pretty quickly from here on out. If I don't finish it this week I'll take it on the plane with me for our Thanksgiving holiday.

So...I'm using Peace Fleece for the sweater and while I like the concept of it, and some of the online reviews say it softens with blocking, I'm finding it a bit difficult to work with. It's quite rough on my hands and somewhat slow going ...even on my Addis! Although, the slow going part might be because I've got too many stitches on the circulars and could stand to go up to the next length. But that's for another discussion.

Back to my sweater....

What is up with this???

What is up with all of my patterns? I've yet to go back to the top down sweater because I just can't get myself to that zen frogging place needed to really concentrate. So...I began the Child's Placket-neck pullover from the Last Minute Knitted Gifts book. i knew that there was a correction online when I began but couldn't get to the computer to print it out so I figured...ok...the error won't be in the first bottom round, it's got to be in the decreasing, sleeve sections, etc. So...I knit four rounds from the book in seed stich. This evening I download the correction and #@$#@ @#$#@$#@$ the error was in the first row! I'd cast on 112 stitches and the new correction called for 113.

So...of course I frogged it and am starting over. But geez, I'm starting to feel cursed. Tell me it's just a run of bad luck...that it will get better. I found that I stopped knitting during late spring and summer. All summer. Just too much to do outside, I guess.

That said now that it's fall I've caught the bug again and am working on a couple of projects including a top down sweater for my six year old and a couple of baby sweaters using knitpicks merino wool. The knitpicks wool is incredible soft...although I'm a tad bit concerned because it's handwash only, but I couldn't resist the cost. I'm working on my gauge swatches now. The aldi turbos in seven (per pattern) were a tad too big so I've switched to sixes. Cross your fingers that it works!

As for the top down sweater...I'm going to keep working on it, but I'm afraid I'm doomed. First, after knitting six inches of it I found an error in the pattern and had to start over. Yes, start over!!!! Six hours of work downt he tubes. The author of the pattern was nice and did confirm the error when I contacted her, but still. I wish she had put the error on her website so that I could have corrected it BEFORE I started knitting. Now, I'm a good eight inches down and found another error...said to knit three inches on the placket, but I think I have to backtrack and re-knit six rows. #@$@#$@#!!!! I was supposed to have 54 stiches between the back two stictch markers and found I have 58! Anyway, I went back into the pattern and figured out that I should have ended the placked two rows earlier in order to reach her numbers...so a frogging we will go. I haven't touched in in a four days because I just haven't been able to face the frogging again. On a good note I'm using a gorgeous burnt orange Peace Fleece wool.

All knitting aside...it's Sunday night and I've just finished watching Grey's Anatomy. Good god, I love that show. For years my weekly TV time was dedicated to ER and the West Wing. But, I have to admit...after all these years together it's time to move on. Now it's Grey's Anatomy and the new show with Gina Davis as the President on Tuesdays. Isn't it sad when you desperately wish the television character was the REAL president?

I have to admit I do feel guilty for neglecting the West Wing. But the writing was never really the same after the original screen writer left the show. I really should have shared that observation with Bradley Whitford when I stood behind him in the ice cream line at the Fourth of July the summer before last. (Yes, true story) Instead, I just bit my tounge and smiled like a good local welcoming a tourist.

But back to my new favorite medical drama...the only pet peave I have is that they don't accurately portray Seattle. Really! My husband and I lived in Puget Sound for six years before we moved east and I ADORED the Pacific Northwest with all my heart. Every day I wish I could go back! So, I'm much too invested in the way they portray the city. On tonight's episode there was a major thunderstorm. Ok...yes, it's possible. But, in the six years we lived there it thundered TWICE. In fact, I know because I called my Mother each time! I grew up in Minnesota...home of REAL thunderstorms. I really had to struggle hard to suspend reality this evening...but I did it and I'm so glad I did because Sandra Oh's character got back together with her boss surgeon. Good decision!!

Still knitting...

Finishing up the grande alpaca scarf in the simple seed stitch. I was once again inspired to try my hand at a sock or two. (After two failed attempts) So, this past weekend, in between cleaning feverishly for a visit from my parents, I pulled out that sock yarn that has been in my stash for AGES and tried my hand at it again. Walla! And this time, I didn't even have to frog it five times before getting the hang of it. It just worked. Apparently, the universe has decided that it's time...that I CAN knit socks.

Finally, the manos has spoken!

So....my wonderful manos has finally spoken to me and declared herself to be a wonderful wool wrap. I'm enjoying knitting for the zen effect...simple, quick, doesn't require too much energy, etc. So, I just didnt' see it as a sweater or poncho. It's a simple pattern that I created...a k3p3, p3k3. I'll add some fringe on the ends when I'm finished. And since I've got plenty of yarn, I may whip up a hat or some mittens with the extra.

I am....

You appear to be a Knitting Adventurer.
You are through those knitting growing pains and
feeling more adventurous. What were those 58,000,000 people thinking?? How can they be so stupid????? As the line in Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi goes, "they don't know what they've got till it's gone..." Well folks, say good bye to social security, women's choice, national parks, and free speech...

Remember, 51% is NOT a mandate. This member of the other 49% is pissed off and I'm not going to quit fighting!

Enough of my soap box. I've got to start stitching up the baby sweater I've knitted for my friends very soon-to-be born baby. And then there's that scarf to knit for my mama. And of course I have to finish the painting that I've started in the kitchen...and drywall the ceiling in the dinning room so that we can get it painted before our family comes for Thanksgiving. Yikes, I just want to sit in front of a fire with a good ball of yarn, bamboo needles, and a glass of chardonay!

In the meantime, I'm dying to get a chance to flip through my latest copy of Interweave Knits. It's wonderful! I love it. Thank you also for the cards and notepad.

Knitting has been on hold for awhile while I recovered. It's been a rough couple of weeks. But, I'm just getting ready to pick up the needles again.

I'm frogging the five inches of the poncho I made...I'm just not a poncho wearing gal. But, I decided that I'm going to use Manos to make a long rectangular shawl. I've been wanting one to ward of the chill of fall and winter in our house. It sounds so boring, but it's really not. I promise! By the way, fall is incredible here in the Berkshires this year. The trees are just stunning!

I am....

What Color is Your Brain?
brought to you by Quizilla

Ugh...worse than I thought...

went to the doctor today thinking I was catching this crud early and just about fell off the table when he told me it was pneumonia! Thank you secret pal!

As for knitting, I still need to finish the back panel of my sweater. It's nearly finished, just another inch or two. I'll post a photo once it's done and pieced together. It's adorable!

Our weekend in Portland was wonderful. Actually, it was perfect! After a walk through the farmers maket we fed the ducks, took a ride on the ferry, and sat on the beach. It was just like getting a taste of Puget Sound again. (Ah...slight homesickness creeps in here...) Well, I couldn't very well roll five skeins into balls by hand now, could I? What a lovely excuse to buy the swift and ball winder that I've been drooling over! Here are the answers to the survey questions:

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer high-end/natural fibers)?
Yes, I admit I am a yarn snob. But really, it's just because the colors are SO MUCH better than the acrylic stuff. Besides, if I'm going to spend my time knitting something, I want it to be the best it can be.

2. Do you spin? Crochet?
Not yet. But I'm sure I'll dabble with spinning in the future.

3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)
No allergies (unless you count every grass, tree and weed in New England!), but I'm not a smoker and don't care for the scent.

4. How long have you been knitting?
Just over a year...but I'm addicted.

5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Not yet, but I'll be happy to put one up! Check back here soon.
UPDATE: Here's my list. Update #2....if that link doesn't work, it's under the name yogaknitter.

6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
To be quite honest, my sense of smell is lacking so scent isn't something I pay particular attention to these days.

7. Do you have a sweet tooth?
That's a big giant YES! Caramel and/or white chocolate are my favorite. I may not have a strong sense of smell, but I sure can taste!

8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
I don't have any other crafts that I do often, I just do small things as they come to me. I'm creative with lots of things for my home, like making a lampshade, turning an armoir into a media cabinet, etc. I like interesting furniture that is classic and can be reused. Lately, I've been intrigued by the prospect of beading.

9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if you want to make her a CD)
Anything but country or jazz. CDs are safest as I don't have a portable mp3 player. I know, I know...I should get with the times.

10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer?
Well, I have short auburn hair, green eyes and freckles (and I'm not even Irish!) I'm drawn more toward the autumn spectrum --browns, burnt oranges, deep reds, greens, dark blues, etc. Natural earthy colors.

11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
A wonderful DH and an amazing five year old son. We live in New England at the base of a mountain. No pets.

12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)
Ah....world peace, happiness.... Gosh, I don't know. I love what I do now (higher education) and will probably stick with it in some shape or form. But, who knows?

13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
I'm open to trying just about anything as long as it's a natural fiber of some sort or the other. I'm working with Debbie Bliss Cashmarino right now and adore it. It's soft and luscious. Mostly, I look for color and quality.

14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Acrylic! It's that color thing again and I've also been really interested in natural things lately.

15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
Hmmmm....I've got a whole list of projects. Lately, I've been obsessed with reading different knitting books.

16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Anything with a worsted weight or bulkier yarn and bigger needes. So, scarves, sweaters, wraps, etc. I've tried the sock thing and it just doesn't do it for me. Maybe later....

17. What are you knitting right now?
A yummy little pink debbie bliss baby sweater for a friend's soon to be born baby. But, I just came home with five skeins of Manos (the photo on my site really doesn't do the color justice at all) and am looking for a good sweater pattern or maybe even a... poncho.

18. What do you think about ponchos? (this is really a curiousity question for us)
Ahhh, well, if you've read my blog you'll know that I'm having issues with ponchos. Prior to this year I really liked them, but since they've become "trendy" I'm rebelling against them. I think my manos is going to a good simple comfy sweater.

19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Depends on the project. When it's something like a scarf I really prefer straight bamboo needles --Crystal Palace needles to be exact. I'm slowly collecting a set of them because I want all of my straight needles to match. I know, wierd obsession! (Trust me, I'm not as organized or anal as that makes me sound!)

But I also love knitting in the round! I've knitted with aldi turbos and really like them. But, I use denise circulars because I don't have to buy a zillion individual circulars. Next on my "to purchase" list are a swift and yarn baller!!

20. How did you learn to knit?
I'm primarily self taught, but I have a wonderful group of women that I can go to when I need to solve a problem or figure out a stich.

21. How old is your oldest UFO? Six months. It's a little Baby Ull baby hat. I got sidetracked. I may just frog it and start over.

Make that Boston...

Just booked a hotel via priceline (gotta love it!) in Beacon Hill. I'll post photos when I can. My gosh, it's so tiny, pink and soft! It's creating a tad bit of baby lust! My plan is to work on it through Saturday and then put the pieces together next week. I'll top the whole project off with a little I-cord topknot hat.

We're off to New York City for a mini-vacation this weekend. Hmmm...if anyone can answer my question as to what was up with that...I would be quite grateful. Surprize! With size 8 crystal palace bamboo needles....my guage was PERFECT. Yes, you read that correctly, PERFECT! I'm quite exctited to get started on this little sweater. Pink isn't a color I get to use often in this testosterone heavy household.

Unfortunately, switching to the crystal palace bamboo means I'm going to have to head to my LYS for a pair of size 7s and I don't think that's going to happen until next weekend. In the meantime, I've decided to give those colori socks another go round. Wish me luck! The last time I started a sock I ended up frogging it at least a half dozen times. So far so good...

On another note, my five year old starts kindergarten in a week. I'm not ready! My baby is going to school. He'll be going to the local elementary school a block away from our house. The fact that it's our third choice school is another story (and a long one at that!). I'm waiting to hear back regarding the teacher that we specifically requested. I love it!

Finished the bag, love felting!

Well, I finished the Sophie bag and discovered that I love felting! I used to be a fan of Martha's paint colors, but I've moved on to Ralph Lauren. Granted, I don't use the paint, just the paint chips and then I have the color matched in a different brand of paint. type='text'>Where the heck did summer go?

When I started this blog, I had every intention of posting regularly. Unfortunately, summer was CRAMMED with travel for both work and tiny bit of play. I just couldn't keep up with everything. In fact, I'm just now getting back on a normal schedule and able to knit regularly. Lots of projects in the works! I'm making a promise to myself to post at least once a week (more if possible).

I finished up a sophie bag while on vacation in Minnesota. Just need to felt it! This will be my first attempt at felting so wish me luck! I used a Cascade 220 yarn that I picked up in Harvard Square a month ago. I'm also finishing up a scarf with a ladder type of yarn. Ugh, for the life of me I can't remember the name of the yarn. I should get that done tonight and add a bit of fringe.

I won!

My Grandmother wins just about every contest she enters...she just ozzes luck. I created my own pattern for the scarf. First, I snipped 40 ten inch fringe peices. Then, I cast on 20 stiches using size 15 bamboo needles, and garter stitched until I ran out of yarn. Easy and fast! It's a bit heavier than I expected, but will be beautiful for fall in New England.

I'm currently starting my first pair of socks. Wish me luck! I'm also choosing peace fleece colors for my next two projects...the child's sweater and the poncho. It all started with yoga. I have a purple mat in my office along with a few yoga books and videos. But to be blunt, I just doesn't keep my attention. I even bought my five year old a yoga mat so that we could exercise "together." Needed some inspiration. Didn't help. The stuff just sits in the corner feeding my fantasy of being a healthy, spiritually centered woman rather than the slightly round and neurotic chick that I am.

And then it happened. Last fall we moved from one coast to the other and landed in a sea of knitters. No kidding! Nearly everyone in my office knits! Before I knew it, I was off to my LYS for a ball of yarn and a pair of needles. My first project was a small scarf (of course) for my kiddo. I've graduated from beginner to addict. I love knitting, adore it, could spend hours in my LYS.

One night my DH heard a report (on NPR??) in which they had discovered that knitting and yoga stimulate the same areas of the brain. Alas, it all fit, knitting is my kind of yoga!
